I must have passed by this particular place thousands of times in the 16 years that I lived on this road. I always knew there was a photographic image right there that I would cherish. But I could never seem to capture it, no matter how many times I tried.
There came a time when I knew for certain that my marriage was ending and I would soon be leaving this beautiful place. After 25 years in a relationship, ending it gets very emotional. One day, I decided to try and channel all that emotion into something creative. My heart told me to set my sites on finding and capturing the elusive image I'd always known was waiting for me on the road leading home. When I got to this spot, tears welled up in my eyes. The fully blossomed trees were ripe and lush with the promise of another spring, another new beginning. Then I saw the cloud overhead. It felt so right seeing the cloud there. It reminded me of my marriage.
Black & White Infrared Film works in mysterious ways. You can study everything written about it and take a thousand photos with it, but you never know exactly how it's going to develop and exactly what image will surface on the film. That's one of the things I love about it. You almost have to have a 6th sense about it. That's the sense that takes you to a different dimension with the images you create. In my mind's eye - and in my heart - I could see the image that I wanted to create from this place in time. It must have been all the intense emotions whirling around inside me that were finally able to reach out, drag it in, and place it on the film for me. It felt like I literally willed it to happen. Working on the image in the darkroom, with it's never-ending dodging and burning, was almost as intense a trial as the final years of my marriage.
It was worth all the care, all the time... all the energy and the work. I'd do it all again. The photo, that is...
