Love on The Cathedral Evening

There’s an amazing collection of art that
I’ve loved for years. It’s placed throughout
the buildings and outdoor public spaces at Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY. One night, I walked through the Plaza approaching
the State Capitol Building. There was something magical in the air and I began marveling at the way the lighting
reflected on the sculpture and architecture, completely transforming it at
night…the way all of it reflected in the surrounding pools of water, further
transforming it… and how nature was actually right inside some of the art. There were comforted sounds coming from ducks and geese who had stopped along the way as they headed south and curled up inside a huge sculpture that
rises up from one of the pools. Everything that night came together to create
a magical, phantasmagoric art experience. I sat there for a long while, reflecting upon the reflections as well as immersing myself in them.
Coming out of a meditative state, I began to notice a couple to the left of me who were warmly embracing. They didn’t see me because I’d done a bit of a disappearing act, becoming the proverbial “angel in the architecture” during my meditation. Then, the loving couple suddenly began a climbing expedition all the way up the large metal sculpture by Ronald Blader entitled “The Cathedral Evening.” Ever so slowly, they inched their way forward to their goal, almost to the very end of the sculpture. Perched there, the love birds silently gazed at the romantic architecture of the New York State Capitol Building. You could just feel the love between them. It’s not my nature to intrude upon people’s privacy when photographing. But the moment was so magical that I felt compelled to quietly find just the right angle to capture it without startling them or revealing their faces.
Hopefully, those love birds will get to see this photo someday. And I hope they’re still that much in love when they do. In retrospect, I realize that I felt compelled to capture the image because something about the moment actually made me believe in love again…
